Post Operative Care

Post Operative Care
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a therapeutic technique that facilitates the elimination of excess fluid and toxins from the body. It reduces swelling and edema while supporting the immune system by enhancing lymphatic circulation. Additionally, MLD accelerates the healing process by reducing inflammation and promoting tissue regeneration.
Incorporating MLD into post-liposuction care can significantly aid recovery by minimizing inflammation that can lead to fibrosis, scar tissue, discomfort, and potential complications. After liposuction, individuals may experience hardness, lumpiness, and banding in the treated areas due to inflammation and trauma from the cannula or incisions. Fluid accumulation in the channels created by the cannula can result in scar tissue or fibrosis. Without post-operative treatment, inflammation may progress to more serious issues like seromas (pockets of blood).
For both elective and non-elective surgeries, integrating lymphatic drainage and scar tissue treatment into post-operative care offers numerous benefits. These treatments help break down and soften scar tissue, improving its appearance and texture, enhancing the functionality of the circulatory, nervous, and lymphatic systems, and promoting the desired contour from the surgery. Timely treatment of the lymphatic and fascial systems after surgery reduces the risk of permanent scar tissue formation. Additionally, addressing trapped nerves can alleviate pain and discomfort associated with scar tissue.
Benefits of Manual Lymphatic Drainage
- Improves bruising by aiding in the removal of trapped blood cells from the tissue.
- Gentle touch is employed to stimulate lymph flow without causing pain, as lymph nodes are located close to the skin's surface.
The massage environment is serene, with rhythmic and soothing techniques that may induce relaxation. Various motions like rotation, pumping, and gliding are used to stimulate lymph nodes and facilitate lymph movement.
Treatment typically begins at the collarbones, where primary lymph nodes are located, before addressing specific areas. Sessions may focus on major lymph nodes in the underarms, abdomen, groin, and back of the knees. Positioning face-up is common to ensure proper decongestion of lymph nodes.
Recommended Post Operative Treatment Protocol
For liposuction on a single area or procedure, it is recommended to undergo 6 sessions. During the initial two weeks, the focus is on the lymphatic system and scar tissue, aiming to reduce inflammation and minimize the risk of long-term scar tissue and "lypo lumpies". We will mobilize tissues and address existing scar tissue.
From day 15- 6 weeks plus, we will dive deeper into scar tissue treatment to reduce long-term scarring and achieve optimal results.
For multiple surgical procedures, areas, and facelifts, 12 post-operative sessions are recommended.
